State of B2B AI Search Vol. 3

AI Search is just 2.4% of B2B search traffic. But accounts that find B2B companies through AI close at 2.5x the rate of organic search, and AI’s share of closed-won deals has tripled in a year. In Vol. 3 we followed 650M sessions past the click, to the companies behind them and into CRM revenue, to show what AI Search is really worth in B2B.

AI traffic is still small

Most AI Search reports measure one thing: how much traffic ChatGPT, Gemini and the rest send to websites. In B2B, that number is still small. AI Search was 2.4% of B2B search sessions in Q3 2026.

But traffic is the wrong unit for B2B. Deals are won by accounts, buying committees and sales cycles that run for months. So for Vol. 3 we followed AI Search visits past the session, to the companies behind them, and all the way into closed-won deals in the CRM.

Here’s what we found: AI Search carries far more pipeline per visit than its traffic share suggests. Accounts that found our clients through an AI engine were 2.5x as likely to close as accounts that came through organic search. AI’s share of closed-won deals tripled in a year, growing faster than its traffic. At one global enterprise client, about 4 in 10 won deals now include an AI Search touch. And AI does its work early, usually before sales even knows there’s a deal.

A wave of GEO and AEO tools like Bluefish, Peec AI and Profound now help brands get cited in AI answers. This report answers the next question: once you’re cited, what is it worth? Answering that takes account-level identity on every visit plus a direct line into CRM revenue, which is exactly the view Octane11 was built to provide. (Catching up? See Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.)

From the visit to the closed deal

We tracked 650M B2B sessions across our ecosystem, resolved them to accounts, and matched them to closed-won deals in our clients’ CRMs. Each panel follows AI Search one step further down the funnel.

Key Findings: State of B2B AI Search (Vol. 3, Q3 2026)

Based on analysis of 650 million B2B website sessions and connected CRM data by Octane11:

  • Accounts that visited a B2B website through an AI engine (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Copilot) were 2.5 times as likely to close a won deal in Q3 2026 as accounts that visited through organic search (1.22% vs 0.49%). The gap held for 11 of 13 clients with enough data.
  • AI Search's share of marketing-influenced closed-won deals tripled in a year, from 1.1% in September 2025 to 3.4% in September 2026, while its share of B2B search sessions grew about 1.8 times, to 2.4% in Q3 2026.
  • At one global enterprise client, about 4 in 10 closed-won deals in Q3 2026 (39%) had an AI Search touch, against an AI share of search traffic of about 3%. That client is excluded from the other AI deal and account averages in this report so it does not skew them.
  • AI visits are deeper: 38% of AI Search sessions lasted 30 seconds or more, compared with 29% of organic search sessions, and AI visitors viewed 2.5 pages per session vs 1.9. AI visitors were no more likely to be on a target account list (about 39-40% of identified visits for both).
  • AI Search works early in the B2B buying journey. 72% of AI-touched closed-won deals had their first AI visit before the opportunity was created. Only 35% had an AI visit while the opportunity was open, compared with 56% for organic search. The last AI visit came a median of 70 days before close, vs 21 days for organic.
  • Claude punches far above its traffic. Claude drove 2.3% of AI Search traffic but 13.5% of AI deal touches. Perplexity drove 2.6% of traffic and 7.2% of deal touches. ChatGPT drove 84% of AI traffic and 65% of deal touches.
  • Search (Organic + AI) accounted for about 28% of accounts engaged by only one channel in Q3 2026, more than 1 in 4 of the accounts nothing else in the marketing mix reached.
  • ChatGPT returned to about 86% of AI referrals in August and September 2026. Google Gemini is the clear #2 at 9.5%, up 124% from September 2025.
  • Within organic search, Bing rose from 9.3% to 12.2% of sessions between September 2025 and September 2026, while Google eased from 88.5% to 86.1%.

A glimpse of what’s coming
4 in 10
At one global enterprise client, nearly 4 in 10 won deals in Q3 had an AI Search touch, from just 3% of its search traffic. We kept this client out of the other AI averages in this report so it wouldn’t skew the results. But it shows where B2B buying is headed once buyers make AI their default research tool.

The Accounts Only Search Reached

% of single-channel-exclusive engaged accounts · May – Sep '26

Incremental accounts are accounts engaged by only one channel, accounts no other channel reached. Organic Search accounted for 24-29% of these exclusive accounts each month from May to September 2026 (27.7% in Q3). AI Search added 0.3-0.7% (0.49% in Q3), peaking in July. Combined, Search accounted for about 28% of all single-channel-exclusive engaged accounts in Q3, more than 1 in 4.

Search’s exclusive reach
~1 in 4
More than 1 in 4 accounts engaged by only one channel came through Search (Organic + AI) in Q3. AI Search’s own slice is under 1% and seemed to peak in July (though the overall numbers are low), but it reaches accounts nothing else in the mix touched.

The Engine Landscape

Claude is for Closers
Share of AI Search traffic vs. share of AI deal touches · Q3 '26

Share of AI Search traffic vs. share of AI deal touches in Q3 2026: ChatGPT 84.4% of traffic, 65.3% of deal touches. Google Gemini 9.4% and 11.4%. Claude 2.3% and 13.5%. Perplexity 2.6% and 7.2%. Microsoft Copilot 1.4% and 2.7%. On traffic alone, ChatGPT returned to about 86% of AI referrals in August and September 2026, level with its October 2025 peak. Gemini is the clear #2 at 9.5% in September 2026, up 124% from 4.3% a year earlier.

Traffic share isn’t deal share
5.9x
ChatGPT is back to 86% of AI referrals and Gemini holds #2, up 124% in a year. But deals tell a different story. Claude drove 2.3% of AI traffic and 13.5% of AI deal touches, 5.9x its traffic share. Perplexity ran nearly 3x. Optimize for ChatGPT alone and you’ll miss where B2B buyers do their research.

Methodology: Data aggregated across the Octane11 B2B ecosystem, covering 650 million sessions from September 2025 through September 2026. AI Search sessions attributed via referral classification across ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot; paid placements such as ChatGPT Ads are excluded. Organic Search covers Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Baidu and Yandex. Share of search reflects Organic Search, AI Search and Reddit Organic sessions combined. Deal influence measures marketing-influenced closed-won deals with an account-matched search session in the 180 days before close, for clients with a connected CRM; it was recalculated for every month this edition, so the series differs from Vol. 2. One global enterprise client, whose very high AI deal presence would otherwise dominate the results, is shown separately in Panel 03 and excluded from the deal presence, account close rate, journey timing, engine deal share and session depth figures. Account close rate compares identified accounts with at least one AI Search or Organic Search session from January through September 2026, and the share of each that closed a marketing-influenced won deal in Q3 2026; accounts can appear in both groups. Journey timing compares the first and last search touch in each Q3 2026 closed-won deal with the opportunity’s created and close dates. Engine deal share counts closed-won deals touched by each AI engine as a share of all AI engine deal touches. These are correlations, not causal effects. Search’s exclusive reach measures accounts engaged by only one channel, across all channels, from May 2026 onward. Earlier months are refreshed with the latest data each edition, so some traffic figures differ slightly from Vol. 2. Stop measuring AI Search by the visit

If AI Search is where buyers build the shortlist, months before sales hears about the deal, then sessions and click-through rates will always undersell it. The B2B teams that get this right will measure AI Search at the account level and tie it to pipeline, not traffic.

Most teams can’t do that yet, because AI referrals arrive without UTMs and without a company name attached. That’s a big blind spot, because most of the buying decision happens before sales ever gets involved. We covered why in 80% of B2B Deals Are Already Decided Before the First Sales Call. And if you’d rather ask your own data these questions directly, see how ask-first reporting works inside Claude and ChatGPT.

B2B AI Search: frequently asked questions

How much traffic do AI search engines send to B2B websites?

In Q3 2026, AI search engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot) accounted for about 2.4% of B2B search sessions, crossing 2% for the first time and peaking at 2.75% in August 2026. Traditional organic search still accounts for roughly 96.6%, and Reddit Organic about 1%. AI's share has more than doubled since Q1 2026 (1.0%), based on Octane11's analysis of 650+ million sessions.

Which AI search engine sends the most traffic to B2B websites?

ChatGPT is the dominant source, accounting for about 86% of AI referral traffic to B2B websites in August and September 2026. That matches its October 2025 peak, after a drop to 69% in April 2026. Google Gemini is the clear #2 at roughly 9.5%. Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot each hold between 1% and 2%.

Which AI search engines are growing fastest for B2B traffic?

Google Gemini has the strongest share gain over the past year, rising from 4.3% of AI referrals in September 2025 to 9.5% in September 2026 (+124%), and it is the only AI source with positive median month-over-month momentum. In Q3 2026 every AI engine grew its raw session volume quarter over quarter, led by ChatGPT (3.2x) and Gemini (2.1x).

Does AI search show up in closed B2B deals?

Yes, and it is growing fast. AI Search's share of marketing-influenced closed-won B2B deals with an AI touch in the 180 days before close tripled in a year, from 1.1% in September 2025 to 3.4% in September 2026, while its share of search traffic grew about 1.8 times. At one global enterprise client, about 4 in 10 won deals in Q3 2026 had an AI Search touch. Organic Search touched about 58% of deals.

Do accounts that find B2B companies through AI search close more often?

Yes. In Octane11's Q3 2026 data, 1.22% of identified accounts that visited a B2B website through an AI engine closed a won deal in the quarter, compared with 0.49% of accounts that visited through organic search, 2.5 times higher. The gap held for 11 of 13 clients with enough data. AI visitors were no more likely to be target accounts, but their sessions ran deeper: 38% lasted 30 seconds or more, vs 29% for organic.

When does AI search influence a B2B deal?

Early. 72% of AI-touched closed-won deals in Q3 2026 had their first AI Search visit before the opportunity was created in the CRM. Only 35% had an AI visit while the opportunity was open, compared with 56% for organic search, and the last AI visit came a median of 70 days before close vs 21 days for organic. AI Search is where B2B buyers build their shortlist.

Which AI engines show up most in closed B2B deals?

ChatGPT touches the most deals, about 65% of AI deal touches in Q3 2026, but that is below its 84% share of AI Search traffic. Claude punches far above its traffic: it drove 2.3% of AI traffic and 13.5% of AI deal touches. Perplexity drove 2.6% of traffic and 7.2% of deal touches, and Google Gemini drove 9.4% of traffic and 11.4% of deal touches.

Is Google losing organic search share in B2B?

Slightly. Google still drives about 86% of B2B organic search sessions, down from 88.5% in September 2025, while Bing rose from 9.3% to 12.2% over the same period.

What is the difference between GEO, AEO, and SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) focuses on ranking in traditional search engines like Google. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focus on getting your content cited and surfaced by AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. As AI search traffic grows, B2B marketers are increasingly investing in GEO and AEO alongside traditional SEO.
